Buddhist Monastery, Likir The Buddhist Monastery at Likir was founded around 1065 CE during the reign of Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, by the venerable Lama Duwang Chosje, who introduced the Kadampa sect. In the 15th century CE, the venerable Lhawang Lodos arrived from Central Tibet and introduced the Gelugspa sect to the monastery. The earlier gonpa was destroyed by fire, and the present structure was built in the 18th century CE. The monastery comprises important shrines such as the Gon-khang and Du-khang and houses a rich collection of thangkas and manuscripts. Source: Archaeological Survey of India
