Panchapandavar Bed, Madurai, Tamil Nadu Panchapandavarmalai, located near Kilaiyur and Kilavalavu, around 40 km from Madurai district, is an important archaeological site. A group of boulders spread between the villages preserves numerous remains of stone beds dedicated to Jain ascetics, along with bas-relief sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras and teachers. The bas-reliefs depict the Tirthankaras either in seated or standing postures. The seated figures are accompanied by the usual chauri-bearers and attendant deities. Some of the images also show traces of paintings. One of the shelters located in the middle portion of the hillock contains 2nd-3rd cen. CE Brahmi label inscription carved below the drip ledge, recording the donation of a stone bed by an individual from Thondi, an early historic port site. In addition, a Vatteluttu inscription dating to the 9th century CE records the carving of the images. Source: Archaeological Survey of India
