Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India releases the Directory of Research and Development (R&D) Institutions every year. Overview of the directory The term R&D institution, used in this Directory refers to either a national laboratory or a research institute or a research station or private and public sector in-house R&D unit or a not for profit Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) or an academic institution The Directory has been divided into three parts. Part-I - information regarding all R&D organisations/ institutions that is arranged sector-wise and listing has been done alphabetically. Part-II - R&D institutions located in various states have been presented state-wise and within the state, sector-wise and further within the sector alphabetically Part III - The names of all R&D institutions along with their respective record numbers as given in Part-I have been arranged alphabetically in Part-III of the Directory. The Directory contains information on 8252 R&D Organisations in the form of addresses/Email /Website/Phone no. /Mobile no. 2025 Directory It is the 13th edition in series. The 2025 Directory contains communication details of 8252 R&D institutions in the Country. The maximum number of R&D institutions (1645 (19.9%)) are located in the State of Maharashtra. This is followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Telangana with 786 (9.5%), 770 (9.3%), 741 (9%) and 620 (7.5%) respectively. In case of Central Sector, the maximum number of R&D institutions 73 (11.7%) are located in the State of Delhi. This is followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka with 65 (10.5%) and 55 (8.8 %) of total Central Sector R&D institutions respectively. The share of various sectors in total number of R&D institutions is: Central Government - 7.5% State Governments - 12.7% Higher Education Sector - 12.5% Private Sector including Scientific & Industrial Research organizations - 65.4% Public Sector Industry including State Public Sector - 1.9%.
